What is Calimate?
Calimate is a web-based training tool developed to improve the consistency, precision and reliability of visual vegetation cover estimations. It supports organisations where consistent field data are essential for environmental monitoring, reporting and evidence-based decision-making.
The method is founded on scientific research demonstrating that repeated calibration with immediate feedback improves estimation precision, reduces observer variation and decreases estimation error over time.
Why it matters
Visual estimation is widely used in field inventories and environmental monitoring. It is a fast and efficient method, but it also presents a well-known challenge: observer variation.
Calimate improves the precision of visual estimations regardless of previous experience, helping organisations collect more reliable data and establish a stronger foundation for analysis, reporting and evidence-based decision-making.
Calimate.se contributes to:
- Improved data quality
- More comparable results over time
- Stronger analyses and reports
- More reliable decision-making
Calimate.se was developed to establish a more structured and shared reference for visual estimations in the field.
How the study was conducted
Calimate is based on a scientific study investigating how calibration with immediate feedback improves the consistency of visual estimations and reduces estimation error. The effect was evaluated by comparing participants’ field estimations before and after calibration.
Baseline assessment
Participants estimated vegetation cover in an initial set of field plots in order to establish a baseline for estimation error.
Computer calibration
Participants estimated vegetation of cover on digital images with immediate feedback of the correct answer.
Field evaluation
A second set of field plots was assessed to evaluate how the calibration influenced precision and between-observer variation.
The field sample plots were measured with the point frequency method in order to establish the actual cover.
What the study showed
The study demonstrated that even a short period of calibration improved the consistency of visual estimations and reduced estimation error.
When participants’ field estimations were compared before and after calibration, estimation error was reduced from approximately 14% to 3% in some cases. The results show that the benefits of computer-aided calibration extended beyond the training itself and could also be transferred to actual field inventory.
The calibration resulted in:
- More consistent visual estimations
- Reduced between-observer variation
- Lower estimation error
- More reliable field data
- A common reference framework for field estimation
It also demonstrated that calibration is:
- Time efficient
- Easy to use
- Self explanatory
- Easy to integrate into existing workflows
- Scaleable for both organisations and projects
The results
The graphs below illustrate how estimation error and between-observer variation changed following calibration with immediate feedback.
Participants were divided into three groups based on previous experience. Before calibration, the most experienced participants showed the greatest estimation error. After calibration, neither experience, vegetation type, background nor vegetation pattern had a significant effect on the results.
How Calimate.se works
Users estimate vegetation cover from realistic images directly in the web interface. After each estimation, the result is compared with a reference value and immediate feedback is provided.
After each estimation, users are shown:
- Reference cover value
- Estimation error
After each training session, a progress graph visualises the user’s development and how estimation error changes over time.
Through repeated calibration, users develop more consistent estimations while contributing to a common reference framework across the organisation.
From a practical challenge to a research-based solution!
Calimate was developed in response to a recurring challenge in field inventories: even small differences in visual estimations can have a significant impact on the reliability of collected data.
By combining practical field experience with scientific research, a calibration method was developed and transformed into a simple, practical tool for organisations.
The goal was to develop a tool that:
- Makes calibration simple and easy
- Establishes a common reference framework for visual estimations
- Builds confidence among field personnel
- Increases the reliability of collected data
- Provides a stronger foundation for analysis and decision-making
